Menstrual Health Defined

2021 saw Menstrual Health finally defined for the first time! Take a moment to let that settle in.

What this means is that previous to this definition there has been no baseline understanding of what constitutes menstrual health and therefore could not be considered in policy making, research, education or by health practitioners. This is revolutionary to now have a definition which will influence policy, research, education and health practices, which affects more than 50% of the world’s population and their holistic health and wellbeing.

Menstrual health is defined as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease of infirmity, in relation to the menstrual cycle."

"Achieving menstrual health implies that girls, women and menstruators across their menstruality journey are able to:

  • Access accurate, timely, age-appropriate information about menstruality as well as related self care practices.

  • Care for themselves during menstruation with access to:

    • effective and affordable menstrual products

    • menstrually friendly bathrooms and infrastructures

  • Access to timely diagnosis, treatment and care for menstrual cycle-related discomforts and disorders via health care services, resources, pain relief and self care strategies.

  • Experience positive and respectful menstrually friendly environments, free from stigma and psychological distress. Including resources and support to cultivate confidence in their decisions and self care related to the menstrual cycle.

  • To have choice on how they interact with all spheres of life in all the phases of the menstrual cycle free from menstrual related exclusion, restriction, discrimination, coercion and or violence."

This definition and the acknowledgement of the menstrual cycle as the 5th Vital Sign of Health has been embedded into all that we offer at Weaving the Red Thread. It creates a foundation of nourishment to empower menstrual and menstruality health and wellbeing. We are passionate about offering a foundation of Positive Menstruality Education to girls and menstruators, so they can evolve into their menstrual cyclical lives with ease, support, nourishment and empowerment.

Many girls, women and menstruators do not have a complete or accurate understanding of menstruation as a normal biological process. Currently, Australia has been speaking to girls, menstruators and students about menarche, periods and puberty education.

Menstruation Matters Report 2021 found:

Is it then surprising that Share the Dignity's Period Pride Report 2021 found that:

When we look at this research we see the origins of a bigger picture of dysfunction, pain, shame and silence that continues throughout the menstruality timeline. Changing the narrative at puberty and menarche has a long term flow on effect to: menstruality health and wellbeing, pain and endometriosis, menstrual disorders - such as PCOS, amenorrhea - and heavy periods, body confidence and mental/emotional wellbeing, inappropriate prescribing of the oral contraceptive pill, infertility, birth experiences, mothering overwhelm and menopause shame and dismissal.

How we begin and establish our Menstrual Cycle IMPACTS our mental wellbeing, body confidence & autonomy, long-term healthy life habits & relationships.
